De Belgische archeologie heeft in de laatste jaren een sterke ontwikkeling doorgemaakt. Niet alleen is de archeologische problematiek complexer geworden, ook zijn er meer actoren archeologisch actief geworden, provincies, gemeenten en schoorvoetend ook archeologische bedrijven. Meer dan ooit is een systematische aanpak, een doorgedreven structurering, duidelijke taakafspraken en een vlotte doorstroming van informatie levensnoodzakelijk voor het efficiënte beheer van het archeologisch patrimonium. Gezien het inherent internationaal karakter van de archeologie dienen deze uitdagingen grensoverschrijdend aangepakt te worden. Met de uitgave van deze beide volumes willen we de Belgische archeologie in de bredere, Europese context plaatsen.

Dit boek is opgedragen aan prof. Dr. em. Joseph (Jef) Mertens. Hij is van in de jaren vijftig de belichaming van de Belgische archeologie, niet alleen aan weerszijden van de taalgrens maar ook internationaal. Met zijn pragmatische aanpak van terreinproblemen, zijn vlijmscherp doorzicht in stratigrafie en chronologie, zijn voorbeeldige publicaties en zijn enthousiasmerende colleges is hij de leermeester van vele generaties Belgische archeologen.

Belgian archaeology has witnessed a remarkable evolution in recent years. Because of economic growth, the number of players has likewise increased, with provinces, communities and, albeit still hesitantly, even some archaeological firms becoming more active. More than ever a systematical approach, proper laws, a clear task division and an appropriate circulation of information have become vital for an efficient monitoring of the heritage. Archaeological problems regularly transgress frontiers asking for European solutions for many of the challenges. These two volumes intend to give a comprehensive picture of archaeological practice in Belgium in the the context of Europe.

If there is one person in Belgium who is to be acknowledged for guiding us to take this road to Europe, it certainly is Prof. Dr. em. Joseph (Jef) Mertens. Since the nineteen fifties, he has been the embodiment of Belgian archaeology, renowned along both sides of the Belgian language frontier, but also far abroad. With an enormous background of practical experience, he taught several courses in European archaeology, ranging from prehistoric to industrial archaeology. He succeeded in passing on his passion for the study of the past in a witty and personal manner.
