Preparatory Architectural Investigation in the Restoration of Historical Buildings

Bauforschung is a fundamental part of every methodology specifically designed to evaluate and maintain historical buildings. The first step towards conservation and restoration involves being well informed about a building’s cultural and historical importance: thus it is necessary to survey it in all its different aspects and at every possible level of significance. This requires a thorough investigation by a specialist -or Bauforscher - who is trained as an architectural historian, in the most fundamental sense of the term. Bauforschung involves the first investigative phase of architectural historical research, combining the analysis of archaeological, historical and iconographical source material with the complete recording of a building’s appearance and pathology. The German word Bauforscher can in fact be translated literally as “building researcher”, implying not only a mastery of the skills of the historian, archaeologist and architect, but also of the materials specialist and the surveyor. This book contains the report on the experiences of building researchers from many different European countries, who met at the Raymond Lemaire International Centre for Conservation in 1996.

La Bauforschung constitue un element fondamental de toute méthodologie spécialement conçue dans le but d’évaluer et de prendre soin d’édifices historiques. Le premier pas vers la conservation et la restauration implique d’être bien informé à propos de l’importance culturelle et historique d’un édifice : il est donc nécessaire de l’inspecter sous toutes ses formes et à chaque niveau pouvant revêtir une quelconque importance. Cette procédure requiert un examen approfondi réalisé par un spécialiste - ou Bauforscher - ayant une formation d’historien de l’architecture, au sens le plus fondamental du terme. La Bauforschung prend en charge la première phase d’investigation de la recherche historique architecturale, en combinant l’analyse des sources archéologique, historique et iconographique avec la description complète de l’apparence et de la pathologie d’un édifice. En réalité, le terme allemand Bauforscher peut se traduire littéralement par « chercheur dans le bâtiment », ce qui implique non seulement une maîtrise des compétences de l’historien, de l’archéologue et de l’architecte, mais aussi du spécialiste en matériaux et en techniques de relevé. Les rapports réunis dans ce livre présentent l’expérience acquise par des chercheurs de différents pays européens, qui ont participé à la rencontre organisée par le Centre International Raymond Lemaire pour la Conservation en 1996.
