Step UP with Advancing Inclusive Publishing: Leuven UP Makes Academic Content Accessible To All

At Leuven University Press we take inclusive publishing seriously and therefore began to structurally adopt and implement the accessibility guidelines in early 2024.

From Monday November 11 to Friday November 15, members of the Association of University Presses celebrate University Press Week. This year, blog tour posts will examine ways that university presses Step UP to educate and enlighten, motivate and inspire, support and act. Veerle De Laet, managing director of Leuven University Press, explains why inclusivity in scholarly and educational publishing is an essential step toward building a diverse reading community.

In the publishing landscape, university presses have a unique position as they are fundamentally mission-driven: committed to advancing scholarly knowledge and promoting educational access. And these values dovetail perfectly with the principles of inclusiveness and diversity.

In scholarly contexts, inclusive publishing is essential to ensure that information and knowledge are accessible to all. At Leuven University Press we take this goal seriously and therefore began to structurally adopt and implement the accessibility guidelines in early 2024. By providing academic texts in various formats and by embracing new technologies that support text-to-speech, including publications with adjustable layouts enriched with alt-text, we make our scholarly titles fully accessible for users with reading disabilities. In doing so, Leuven University Press actively contributes to a more inclusive environment that encourages participation in scholarly discourses and debates.

Clearly, inclusive publishing also offers educational opportunities: it empowers individuals with reading disabilities, for whom barriers can be significant, to engage with educational content on a par with their peers. Leuven University Press applies the accessibility principles in its textbooks and ensures access for all students. The role of university presses in this endeavour is apparent: many university presses are at the forefront of initiatives to make academic resources accessible. They can lead by example in adopting inclusive practices to ensure that all students and scholars, regardless of ability, can engage with their publications. This includes not only producing accessible formats but also fostering dialogues about the importance of inclusivity in academia.

In conclusion, inclusivity in scholarly and educational publishing is not merely a trend; it is an essential step toward building a diverse reading community. By recognizing the needs of readers with disabilities and taking action to ensure access, we can create an environment where every individual feels seen and included.

The educational and scholarly value of inclusive publishing, particularly within the framework of university presses, further underscores its importance. Mission-driven publishers such as university presses play a crucial role in enriching the publishing landscape by fostering ‘bibliodiversity’, amplifying the voices of those who have been traditionally marginalized, and making scholarly content accessible to all.
